Society plays an important role in promoting the use of tobacco. For example, many people learn and explore tobacco use from peer pressure and advertising that, it’s the cool thing to do. Tobacco companies are also a very lucrative business. In today’s society, people continue to smoke, despite the warning labels on cigarette packages.
There are many reasons people smoke, despite the warning labels on cigarette packs. People smoke cigarettes for many different reasons. Some smoke to gain popularity among their peers, nervous energy, or out of sheer habit. Some may smoke cigarettes because their friends or relatives smoke. Other people smoke cigarettes to relieve depression or to decrease appetite in order for them to shed unwanted pounds.
There are three main substances found in tobacco smoke. They are nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide. The nicotine in tobacco is very addictive. Substance use and substance abuse often start with a simple tobacco product, such as cigarettes, which can sometimes lead to marijuana use. It is a known fact that cigarette smoke does not harm just the smoker, but other people that are around the smoker, and in the smoker’s presence. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Since 1964, approximately 2,500,000 nonsmokers have died from health problems caused by exposure to secondhand smoke.” (CDC)
Cigarettes are habit forming and can be very expensive, depending on how many packs of cigarettes a person smokes in a given day.…
