I have read, researched, and interviewed several people to find the facts about the culture that my diversity report is about. I have struggled over the right words to say and how to start out my report, then I realized the words are here in my heart. Have you ever wondered about the shade of your skin, the place you grew up, or the accent in your words? What about the makeup of your family, the gender you were born with, the intimate relationships you chose to have or the generation you are born in? The American identity has changed and still, today continues to change, therefore I want to take you back to a little history of where the Native American Indians first began their journey.
When people hear the words Native American or Indians, do we really understand the meaning of the words or even who these people are? According to the Indian heritage dictionary (2011), “Native American means any member of the people living in North or South America before the Europeans arrived, Native Americans are known as indigenous people, which means the first people. The Native American culture in the United States had a wide-spread of diverse groups socially and geographically.” There have been studies about the geographical, but J. M. Jackson, (2000), said, that “the nomadic Indians are ancestors who traveled over a land-bridge over 13,000 years ago to cross the Bering Strait into the United States.” For thousands of years Native Americans have struggled with keeping their…
