Documents 1, 3 ,4 ,6 and 10 are all examples of the influence of political interests on the modern Olympics. These documents illustrate how political tensions and pride for one’s country shaped the Olympics of the modern era. Document 1 describes Pierre de Coubertin’s attempt to convince the Athletic Society of France to help him revive the Ancient Olympic Games. He states that by sending athletes of each country into other countries for the games, the “true trade of the future” may be constructed as peace is created between nations. Coubertin believes this will lead to less wars between countries, and he hopes that the Olympics will promote peace and harmony between nations.…

In the mural "Going to The Olympics" by Frank Romero, he placed many symbols in is mural in a specific place. The symbols hat i saw are the hearts, the iron, the blimp, two guys fighting, a horse, a portrait, palm trees, and also cars. The hearts may symbolize the love for LA, the two guys fighting probably symbolizes the games that would be in the Olympics. Also the cars have a certain color in a certain order, they have the colors of the Olympic logo and are in the exact order. In my opinion the way Romero used the choice of colors and shapes to create the mood for this picture of Los Angeles was unique.…

In February of 2002, at the Winter Olympics taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah, two Canadian figure skaters were trapped during what was the most high-profile judging scandal of all time. At no fault of their own, the pair consisting of Jamie Salé and David Pelletier lost their chance at the gold medal when a French judge voted in favour of the Russian pair. Thus, the Russians claimed the gold medal and the Canadians settled for silver. When confronted, the French judge admitted to being pressured by the head of the French skating organization to rank the Russians higher than Salé and Pelletier. This would ensure a favourable ranking for the French pair later in the week.…
The Social and Political Outbreaks of the 1960s Olympics “Bang”! The runners jump off their blocks from the start and begin to pick up lightning speed. The 2002 Winter Olympic Games should have been highlighted by the great accomplishments of athletes such as the Canadian men’ ice hockey team or Apolo Ohno. Instead, these Olympic games are mainly remembered for the number of scandals that surrounded the international event. First, it was found that the President and Vice President of Salt Lake Bid Committee were both caught offering bribes to various members of the IOC. Second, during the pairs’ figure skating competition, dual gold medals were eventually awarded as the result of French figuring skating judge Marie – Reine Le Gougne’s favorable score for the Russian team of Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze causing a disadvantage to the Canadian team of Jamie Sale and David Pelletier,…
These factors continue to influence the games today and they are constantly evolving as time progresses. In order to more fully comprehend the factors that helped shape the Olympic Games in the 20th century, an additional document such as a male competitor’s opinion of having females perform in the Olympic Games. This document could show the opinion of a male athlete and could be compared to the opinion of Hassiba Boulmerka (Document 8) and with document 2 to produce a more complete assessment of the social factors, in particular, that shaped the modern Olympics. Another document that would be helpful in assessing the factors shaping the modern Olympics could be a document containing views on the Olympics from ordinary middle class citizens in various host countries. Middle class citizens probably would be able to give a reliable idea of what the Olympics are like and could describe major elements that impact the games.…
