Though most people we scared about openly admitting they were transgender, two women were not and became known as transgender activist of their time. This two strong minded women being Christine Jorgensen and Laverne Cox. Christine was a US Army GI in World War two. She began her transition into a women in 1951 in Copenhagen, Denmark. She became the first widely known transwomen to undergo sexual assignment surgery. This sparked the interest of nearly everyone in the U.S. She was brought on different television shows, and was able to explain herself and answer many questions that the world had to throw at her. The world in a way accepted her which gave hope to everyone that was in fear of transitioning into who they wanted to be. Likewise to Christine, Laverne also gave hope to those who are transgender now or hoping to become transgender. She is a transgender woman who has made many moves in the celebrity world as a transgender woman. She is proud of who she has become. In a way she has showed the world what being transgender is really about. She shows that being transgender is not a “handicap.” She showed this by being the first transgender female on the cover of Time Magazine and received an Honor by GLAAD with her work as an advocate for the transgender community. She is able to use her fame and success to advocate and support the LGBTQ community anyway she feels necessary.
