During the Civil War and the Reconstruction period which would soon follow, the claim that “The North won the war, but lost the peace” is valid. The government, led by Republican Abraham Lincoln issued martial law on states to keep a Union advantage but lost some public appeal as it was deemed unconstitutional. Besides political, social differences were also brought to the forefront of the war through the draft situation. Due to the emancipation proclamation and the 13th Amendment, more issues were brought up resulting with the new freedman. With the first presidential assassination in the history of the country, this period also had a chaotic moment as Lincoln was killed. With all taken into account, the Northern victory ended the war, but by no means unified the country.
