Because of its near-total dependence on petroleum fuels, the U.S. transportation sector is responsible for about a third of our country’s climate-changing emissions. Globally, about 15 percent of manmade carbon dioxide comes from cars, trucks, airplanes, ships and other vehicles. “Cars, trucks and sport utility vehicles driven by U.S. citizens are to blame for about 2/3 of greenhouse gas emissions from the U.S. transportation sector (Transportation).” A plane releases 53 pounds of CO2 a mile, compared to a car that releases half of that, which is 24 pounds of CO2 per mile. With that said, a plane releases twice as much of CO2 as a car does. Since a plane last longer on earth and throughout the day, it is harming the atmosphere much faster. Accordingly, others may argue that a simple way to reduce CO2 from transportation is to travel less than usual by road and air, but the truth is that it barely contributes to reducing CO2 (5). It does not decrease the amount of CO2 per mile by air or road. They recommend buying hybrid vehicles, but the truth is that they cost more than the usual gas vehicle and battery life is unknown too (5). In addition, the electric bill is a huge part of the cost besides paying for the car (Ways). Nevertheless, human beings are 100% responsible on behalf of relying on transportation that releases unsafe toxins into the
