Because of their low cost and flexibility, vehicles overwhelmingly dominate the markets for passenger and freight transport throughout the developing world. Today’s on-road vehicles produce over a third of the carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide in our atmosphere; and over twenty percent of the global warming pollution. Carbon emissions from the burning of gasoline to power cars, trucks, and other methods of transportation is one of the biggest cause of global warming. Pollution created by cars and light trucks accounts for nearly one-third of American carbon emission, and emissions of carbon dioxide from airplanes is responsible for an additional 3.5 percent of global warming. There is definitely an approach to reduce greenhouse gas emission standards through enforcing stricture regulations, but I believe there is another solution that is feasible in the next 5-10 years. I believe the company in control right now is Tesla Motors. Elon Musk, their CEO, has stated Tesla is indeed a technology company instead of a car company. Potentially, this may hint towards directing their efforts to scaling their technologies to other car companies by allowing use of their battery technology. Nissan and Chevrolet have proven this with their “Leaf” and “Volt” models. However, Tesla’s been able to create a technology far superior to these two and Elon Musk has continued to promise scaled production of batteries along with reducing the price of battery technology as a whole. Tesla uses the 18650 cells for plug-in vehicles. To demonstrate success, the supplier for battery technology went from a 2 billion loss in the Q2FY12 to a 4 billion profit in the most recent quarter of performance.
