During the years, there has been a great increase in obesity amongst children in the United States. Obesity is measured by the Body Mass Index (BMI) of thirty or more is considered obese. BMI is found by taking the weight and height of the individual, to determine their corresponding BMI. There are many factors contributing to the cause of childhood obesity. However, there is negative effects, as health illnesses. Many children start at a young age being obese that, may lead to long term effects at young age. In order to reduce obesity individuals must understand the causes as lack of physical activity, the link to fast food and environmental factors and its effects.

Liz Szabo a medical reporter claims, “Sandra Hassink, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, credits savvy marketing, such as advertising the food with cartoon characters and including toys with meals” (1). Like McDonald 's that promotes happy meals, many kids are attracted to the toys that come inside the meals. In which, fast food meals contain many calories, this is why many children are obese because of fast food restaurants. Regarding to the article, “Fast Food and Childhood Obesity Advice Articles,” the author assert, “But since Americans consume up to a quarter of their calories away from the home today, our kids could easily slip into a rut of high-fat, high-calorie, low-nutrition kids ' meals” (1). All because children consume more calories at a fast food restaurant than at home. During the past several years, fast food restaurants have increased their meal portions. Making it for children to consume more calories than needed. Elle Paula a graduate with a Bachelor of Science in nutrition asserts, “Children who eat fast food regularly have a higher intake of hamburgers, pizza, fried potatoes and soft drinks and a lower intake of fruits, vegetables and milk than children who don’t eat fast food as often” (1). As for Fast food companies, give unhealthy foods to children with the advertisement of toys included in the meal. Also, with technology causing the lack physical activity amongst children. It also depends on how a child 's environment is that majority of the time may cause obesity amongst children. These influences can lead to childhood obesity and also lead to illnesses. This has been a vast issue and it 's affecting many children each year. Children can develop illnesses at a very young age. Children should be able to live a healthy life yet, there is many factors that make it difficult for some children to stay healthy. All these factors and risks can be detrimental by preventing childhood obesity and reduce the high rates of childhood obesity. To reduce these high rates of childhood obesity by having doing more physical activity, healthy eating and changes at home and the environment surrounding families.
