In the novel, The book Thief by Markus Zusak, the exciting tale if Liesel Meminger is told. The intriguing , sad, and suspenseful story would not be the same without its defining characters, setting, conflicts, and theme. All of these aspects come together to create an amazing Novel. To start, The Book Thief includes many different characters, all who play an important part in the plot. A character that could be considered a best friend is Rudy Steiner. Rudy could be considered a best friend due to the important character traits he possesses. Most prominently, Rudy is a very trustworthy person. He shows this trait at many points in the book. The book thief takes place mainly in the town that Liesel, the main character, resides in. The major events occur in Molching Germany, near Munich. The major events in the book occur from the time of 1939-1943. The setting of the novel is ideal, and in fact crucial to the story’s plot. If the story had not occurred in Nazi Germany during the time of the second world war, there may not have been much of a story to tell. The plot of The Book Thief is supported by the threats caused by war, poverty, and the consequences of hiding a Jew, the Nazi party’s greatest aversion. There are many events that prove The Book Thief is set in an ideal location. For example, an event that occurred on page 102. In regards to the fire held on Hitler 's Birthday the book states, “It would commemorate not only the Führer’s birthday,but the victory over his enemies and over the restraints held on Germany since the WW1.” This line from the book supports that Adolf Hitler, Germany’s Führer, had a large influence on the lives of German’s like Liesel, and in addition that war was a very important aspect in German’s lives. To add, If the book did not occur in the same setting, this may not have been true. Following the fire Liesel stole a book, something that is very defining to her as a character. The theme that is ever present in the novel is to always hold onto hope. The Book Thief’s main character, Liesel Meminger, never loses hope through all she endures. In fact, Liesel seems to always have hope when the odds are stacked against her. For example, there was a time in the book when Max had been asleep for many weeks. Liesel’s whole world began to revolve around the hope that he would wake again. On page 317, death had visited Max ready to take him. However, he could not having seen the way Liesel refused to give up hope. She read to him daily, brought him gifts for when he would wake, and simply sat and spoke to his still body. On page 319 it states, “Liesel rushed hope from school each day in the hope that Max was feeling better.” The hope Liesel always held onto in the most hopeless situations helps define The Book Thief’s theme. In the chapter titled The Promise Keeper’s Wife (page 420-430) everybody is bidding farewell to Liesel’s adoptive father, Hans Hubermann. The theme of always holding onto hope shines through in the dialogue exchanged. All the characters talk of when he will come home, not if he will come home. On page 425 Liesel asks, “Will you play for us when you get come?” Papa even told Barbara Steiner, “Of course I will, it’s just a war.” after she had told him to “Come home alive.” on page 423.
