The Book Thief

The Book Thief is a book centered around a girl named Liesel Merminger during WWII. Throughout the book Mark Zusak does an incredible job of developing the character’s personalities. Liesel Merminger being the main protagonist of the book is focused on more than many of the other characters throughout the novel. This being the case the reader learns more about her character traits than others such as Hans or Rosa. Hans and Rosa are also main characters but less time goes towards learning about them.

After reading The Book Thief, I have concluded that the theme is the ability words have to dominate us; the author gives a large amount of examples throughout the whole book. Beginning with the relationship of Liesel and Hans Hubermann, when learning the alphabet as well as the concept of reading, “…but it was not so much school who helped me to read. It was papa. ”(Zusak, 64). Hans stayed up late to give her lessons so she would be able to catch up with the other students and not feel like an outcast in the classroom.…

The theme of The Book Thief is death. I believe that this is the theme because death is reoccurs throughout the whole book. Death is also the narrator of this story. This book took place during the genocide of Jewish people, meaning that all the Jewish people in Germany were being tossed in concentration camps as if they were meaningless and being killed. The story begins with Liesel’s brother’s unfortunate death, later on in the book we find out that her mother also died in a concentration camp.…

ANALYZE A recurring theme weaved through the story of The Book Thief is the power of words and how Liesel used them to influence the people around her. She read to the people who lived on Himmel Street while they all stood crammed into a basement during the air raids, and her readings calmed the people down and had the ability to distract them from the fact that their homes might be ruined as bombs went off above them. She was writing when all of Himmel Street went down in flames and everyone she loved had died except for Max and the mayor’s wife.…
