The second story “The Black cat” by Edgar Allan Poe is the perfect example of instinct vs reason because the whole story is a tale of how instinct leads a human to do inexplicable actions. This guy started as a reasonable guy who had a great passion for animals but as the story progresses he becomes crazier and starts doing instead of thinking. like; “One morning, in cool blood, I slipped a noose about its neck and hung it to the limb of a tree ...” (narrator,9) when the narrator becomes ill of his pets especially the cat , and feels irritated by the way they are treating him (like following him around and showing affection toward him) , to stop this he decides to kill the pet that showed the most affection towards him “the cat”, after this action the narrator becomes more insane, and when the new cat appeared his anger increased and, eventually; “Goaded, …show more content…
This element helps the reader understand both the character and the plot, in the way that it shows us the “human side”(emotional) of the character. In the story “The Devil and Tom Walker” Washington Irving gives guilt a character and that 's the “Devil”. The Devil represents what Tom Walker would 've felt if he wasn 't to intrinsic.Tom walker had no guilt when he took the money from the devil, he felt no guilt when his wife got killed by the devil, and felt no guilt when he started taking people 's houses.His heart told him to reconcile, to repent his action , and to forgive the poor land jobber. Toms greed and pride cloud his mind and he ends up saying “The devil take me..if i have farthing!”(Tom,6) leading him to hell. The story “The black cat” by Edgar Allan Poe makes the narrator overcome guilt as the story progresses and develop achievement. This is a good example because it shows the characters development. "One morning, in cool blood, I slipped a noose about its neck and hung it to the limb of a tree … (narrator,9)" The character feels remorse when he kills the cat but afterwards, he feels a sort of satisfaction because that anger that he had inside had gone away, after killing his wife he said; "Once again I breathed as a free man" as if his wife contributed with the anger, but he felt no guilt making him outgrow guilt, and later on when the police arrive and are unable to find his dead
