Characterization is a major role in novels and stories for the audience to be able to picture what each character is like and how they act. In the novel, hush, hush, by Becca Fitzpatrick, characterization helps the audience get a better outlook on the character, Patch. Patch is a fallen angel disguised as a high school student and both the Red Death and the Devil are both evil spirits. The characterization of Patch and the characterization of the supernatural characters in the stories, The Masque of the Red Death and The Devil and Tom Walker, are similar as well as different.

In The Masque of the Red Death, the supernatural character, Red Death, isn’t a human body like Patch is in the novel. In the novel, Patch is characterized by the way how his presence can be felt by the main character in the book. In the novel, it says, “…I felt a familiar presence nearby. It was like someone had dropped a scoop of ice cream down the back of my shirt. It was the same shivery jolt I experienced whenever Patch approached” (Fitzpatrick 136) which shows how his presence was felt by the main character in the novel. Likewise, the Red Death gives off an eerie presence that can be felt by the other characters in the story. In The Masque of the Red Death, it says, “When the eyes of Prince Prospero fell upon this spectral image…he was seen to be convulsed, in the first moment with a strong shudder either of terror or distaste…” (Poe). This quote from the story shows that the Red Death made the Prince frightened by his presence. Unlike in the novel where Patch is a fallen angel and is human, the Red Death is an evil spirit in The Masque of the Red Death. The characterization of both characters is to make the audience picture that they both are dark and eerie to match the gothic style in the novel and

TITLE (HOOK)GIVING UP Short stories are put together in a way that the reader can find meaning on what is being unsaid more then what is being said, allowing the reader to read in between the lines and think critically. Short stories compared to novels have less content, therefore making it more difficult to find the meaning, but with the use of elements of fiction one can effectively grasp as much information as possible. One common theme for “Tall Tales from the Mekong Delta” by Kate Braverman and “Aurora” by Junot Diaz” is destructive relationships and drug influence. The authors of Tall Tales and Aurora use characterization and figurative language to interconnect the thought that when undesirable temptations are displayed to human kind, it can lead to bad decisions and no self-control of the inner self that ultimately lead to physical/verbal abuse and drug use. Characterization is a fundamental piece of a story, allowing the readers to create their own perspective and interpretation of the character.…

Many critics agreed that movies are typically different to the original books and “The Masque of the Red Death” is no exception. Moreover, we know that in the written discourse the storyteller makes the sense of what we read via his perspective. However, in the movie the writer of the original text vanishes, the director must depend on alternate apparatuses of the movie to replicate what was felt, reflected and depicted on the book. In adapting “The Masque of the Red Death” from page to stage, Roger Corman includes mush materials, for instance, romance and some Satanism scenes. In the story at hand, since the original story is very short Roger Corman had much to include.…

The whole plot deals with mortality. In January 1842 Poe’s wife Virginia suffered a lung hemorrhage, spitting up blood; this was a symptom of tuberculosis, the dreaded disease that ultimately killed her, as it had Poe’s mother and foster mother. Poe is believed to have composed “The Masque of the Red Death” in March of that year, and it is easy to speculate that his story was influenced by his personal experience. This captures the emotions that someone might experience if his or her loved one was suffering from an incurable disease. (Bloom’s How to Write about Edgar Allan…

The story The Masque of the Red Death as it is written by Edgar Allan Poe holds meanings relating to doom that stretches far beyond oneself tuberculosis, and these themes are made apparent because of the figure in the red mask. One idea that commonly pops into the heads of the readers of this story is that the figure in the red mask embodies and represents the Red Death itself, and I believe this is true. The narrator read "... Now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death" (Poe). Though it is not explicitly stated, it is quite easily inferred that, considering this statement is at the conclusion of the story and after all characters' action, the figure was indeed tuberculosis personified.…

In the end, death has the final word. In Edgar Allan Poe’s dark short story “The Masque of the Red Death,” Prince Prospero invites the remaining healthy members of a community to hide away in his quarantined castle while the outside is plagued by the personified Red Death. Once Death enters the castle, it leaves no survivors. In “The Masque of the Red Death” Poe often depicts his characters’ actions as insane, but seemingly normal and fails to recognize that they are ludicrous; he then rejects and contrasts the beliefs in the Bible, in order to arrive at an all encompassing theme of an absolutely ineludible death. Because Prince Prospero behaves strangely, Poe calls his mental health into question by manipulating polysyndeton that forces…
