The Benefits Of Alternative Energy

Improved Essays
Alternative Energy is the future. We need clean, renewable energy, since our current sources of energy are dirty and finite.
Current non-renewable power sources include coal power, natural gas power, and other fossil fuels. These fuel sources create heat, which boils water and makes steam. This steam turns a turbine, which turns a generator, which makes electricity. The advantage to using these sources is that they are inexpensive. The disadvantage is that they are dirty sources of power. They all pollute in one way or another. The fossil fuels are not renewable, meaning they will run out someday.
Nuclear power makes heat using a nuclear reaction. It is renewable, but it gives off nuclear waste. Biomass uses organic material to make energy.

We will be discussing these in detail later, along with biomass. Let’s start with discussing solar power.
Solar power is power from the sun. We can use this energy for many things, including warming water, making electricity, and heating homes. Solar energy is good because it is clean and renewable energy. Also, as long as the sun shines, we will never run out of solar energy.
Solar energy has been used since the 1500 's. Leonardo De Vinci used mirrors to use the sun 's power and heat water. Variations of that were used after that, but it wasn 't until 1883 before the first solar cell was made. The solar cell became even better in 1954 when a solar cell capable of six percent energy conversion efficiency with direct sunlight. In 1980, the first solar power plant was dedicated. Solar was finally used to make electricity on a large scale.
Solar power continues to grow every day. However, it is not growing fast enough to become our main power source. One problem is that it is expensive to build. Another is that it does not work when the sun goes down. Batteries have to be used, but today 's batteries are not very

These systems can be expensive, but there are grants available as incentives for using solar energy. A system can cost up to $25,000, but with grants, this price can be reduced to about $11,000. While that is still a bit expensive, you will be saving a lot of money by having reduced electricity bills, and the system could pay itself off within 10 years. There are a variety of companies that can create a solar system for your home. You can find these companies, calculate savings when using solar, and see many other solar recourses at the Solar Energy Industries Association’s website.
Wind power is power from the wind. We use the power of the wind in multiple ways, including making electricity. The good thing about wind power is that it is clean and renewable. As long as the wind blows, we will have energy. The disadvantage of wind power is that sometimes, the wind doesn 't blow.
Wind energy was used to power sail boats as early as 5000 BC. Then by 2000 BC, the wind was used to pump water and grind grain. Before electricity, wind was mostly used in food production. Once electricity happened, wind power was used to make

Many ideas and inventions have been used to make the use of our resources more efficient. Using solar power is one way we are using energy that is already there to our advantage. It is becoming more affordable, easier to obtain, and more popular within the country. Just in the past eight years alone, incorporation of solar power has increased from 1.2 gigawatts to thirty gigawatts (“Solar”). To give an example of the impact this has, that is enough energy to power about 5.7 million households in America. Solar power is slowly becoming a more reasonable alternative to have because it is becoming more accessible. In the past six years, the cost of solar panels has gone down by about sixty percent…

Moreover, renewable energy is a natural process, meaning the energy will be sustainable as it will never run out. Fossil fuels emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, causing global warming. In the United States, 29 % of the global warming emissions come from the electricity production after burning fossil fuels like coal and natural gas (Inventory, 2018). As opposed to fossil fuels, the majority of the renewable energy sources produce little to no global warming emissions. Solar energy can generate electricity in solar cells without releasing CO2 into the atmosphere. By implementing these clean energy solutions, health could be improved as most of the health issues related to air and water pollution would disappear due to the fact that solar, wind and hydroelectric system don’t produce any contaminated agents. According to one Harvard study the life cycle costs and public health effects of burning coal could be estimated at $74.6 billion every year (Epstein et al,…

There are two types of solar panels that are used one is photovoltaic and then there is solar thermal. They both work by turning the suns energy into usable energy. Geo-Exchange technology has been utilized since the late 1940’s. It is clean and efficient and renewable from natural heat inside the heat. Most states have a very hot season and a very cold season a few feet below the earth surface it is cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Geothermal heat pumps take advantage of the temperature difference by exchange heat with earth and are able to heat and cool and even provide hot water. These systems are very expensive and this is one of the negative thing of this energy sources. Hydropower is the next one we are learning about. Hydroelectric generation use to be a stable for energy whenever there was a river or a fast-moving stream. There are a lot of Dams that are used for this some big ones like the Hoover Dam. They use more the 40% of the total U.S. hydroelectric power. Connecticut has many small ones that they use all over the state. The Bigger the drop the more energy it will produce. That is why places like Kansas there is not many Hydroelectric power. This is Connecticut’s renewable energy…

Wind power is obtained by the wind in our atmosphere and then it’s converted into mechanical energy followed by electricity. Basically, wind is free and wind turbines. In addition, wind power does not release pollutants and greenhouse gases into the environment and it only requires a small amount of land. The first disadvantage is, that the wind is not continuous and may not produce electricity. The second, wind turbines are huge and noisy. This nonrenewable resource can never be depleted.…

By virtue of this, the need for alternative energy sources continues to grow at the same or even a greater rate than that with which primitive energy sources never cease to shrink under the pressure of human consumption. The most popular renewable energy sources are as follows: solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and hydroelectric energy. All of which, in addition to being overwhelmingly abundant and totally renewable, have very little carbon emissions, thus satisfying both of the concerns involved with oil, gas, or coal ("Alternative…

Solar power is a costly but efficient energy source that harnesses the energy of the suns rays to produce power. It is known that one solar panel can produce 230 watts of power. Solar power is a renewable energy that is proven to last 30-40 years on each solar panel. They are easy to maintain, sustainable and reduces electricity costs. But there is a downside to solar, from the article ‘Solar Energy Pros and Cons – Energy Informative’ states “Some manufacturing processes are associated with greenhouse gas emissions” (Maehlum 6). The making of solar panels produces Nitrogen Trifluoride and Sulfur Hexafluoride, a much more potent greenhouse gas than Carbon Dioxide. Solar panels overall are a much better energy source than coal power. Another great renewable energy source is wind power. Wind power works as air flows through wind turbines produces energy to the generators in the form of electricity. The great thing about wind power is that it’s cheap to make, does not pollute, and takes up very little space. Wind power is likely to grow exponentially over the next 5-10 years as prices of production reduce and the name becomes more popular. The problem with wind power is that it needs wind to power the turbines. It’s not always windy, and wind turbines are known to be noisy. They are also a threat to wildlife, from the article ‘Wind Power Pros and Cons – Energy Informative’ says “Birds, bats and other flying creatures have slim chances of surviving when taking a direct hit from a rotating wind turbine blade” (Maehlum 4). Wind power is a very efficient renewable energy source and will soon to become more known in the near future. Setting aside solar and wind power, another very reliable and energy source is Nuclear Power. Nuclear power produces much more energy then coal power. Nuclear power unfortunately is not a renewable resource but does not emit any Carbon Dioxide. But…
