How does wind energy work?
When the sun warms the land on the Earth, the atmosphere heats also. Warm air rises and cool air sinks, therefore, when the warm air rises, the cool air from the sea replaces it. This movement of air is what makes the wind blow.
When the wind blows against the wind turbines, this spins the blades. These blades capture some of the kinetic energy from the wind. The generator takes the kinetic energy from the spinning blades and turns it into electrical energy.
What is wind energy best used for?
Before the modern way of powering machines using electricity, people had to get their food and water by working. Primarily, windmills were used to pump water, or grind grain. Today, wind …show more content…
• 1974-1980-Large wind turbines were developed in the U.S.’
• Today- Wind turbines are being used all over the world, varying from small turbines to massive farms, powering homes and cities.
Where are wind turbines best suited?
Currently Europe is the continent that has the most off shore wind power with a total of 308 turbines out to sea. However, if you wanted an inland wind farm, the best places would be:
• Somewhere faraway and remote so that it doesn't disturb people. Also, some would argue that wind turbines are a form of eye pollution.
• Coastal areas, mountains and plains are a good place to put a wind farm as wind usually is best in these undisturbed areas. Places like the Wellington, New Zealand, have a lot of natural wind. Places like Wellington would be an ideal place to have a wind farm as it is the windiest city in the world.
What problems are there with wind power?
Wind energy has some disadvantages. One of which is the force that rotates the turbines. Wind changes, and when there is no wind, the turbines create no electricity. People often argue against wind turbines for the pretext of “visual pollution”. This means that some people may not sell their land for a wind farm to be built. Some wind turbines alter television reception. Wind turbines emit a humming/buzzing sound. However, this is not seen as a main concern as wind farms are usually built away from
