The Battle of Gettysburg which is considered to be the greatest battle of the American civil war, was fought in 1863, from July 1 to July 3.To put it differently, the war is also said to be the largest battle ever fought in North America because of the countless casualties involved. The war involved the Union’s Army of the Potomac under Major General George Gordon Meade and the Confederacy’s Army of Northern Virginia commanded by General Robert Edward Lee who wanted foreign recognition for the Confederacy. Following the tremendous victory over Union forces at Chancellorsville, General Robert Edward Lee led the Confederacy’s Army into Pennsylvania in late June 1863. On July 1, the already dispatched Confederates army under George G. Meade clashed with the Union’s Army of the Potomac.
The following day saw heavier fighting General George G. Meade’s men attacked the Federals from all sides, on the third-day general ordered the “Pickett’s Charge”, assault by the Confederacy’s Army on the enemy’s center at Cemetery Ridge the Federals attacked by less than 15000 troops. Although Lee’s army penetrated the union’s lines they eventually failed, the resulted to uncountable casualties and the confederacy’s Army were forced to retreat to Virginia.
The great victory over the Army of the Potomac at Chancellorsville filled General Robert Edward Lee with confidence. He rebelled and invaded the north for a second time with the first attack at Antietam the previous time ending in a fail. He…
