(Wikipedia 15 Nov. 2015.). “ The Catcher in the Rye came out in 1951 and was an immediate critical and commercial success.” (Scott 10). ‘’This novel was centered around Holden’s ambivalent feelings about adulthood. Finally, near the end of the novel, he overcame his crisis.’’…
Joshua Cheng Mrs. Wu English 2HP, Period 5 30 April 2018 Connector Chapter 1-8 Catcher in the Rye Real World Connections: The first few chapters of Catcher in the Rye can be related to a news article that talks about moody teens. As seen through our character Holden, he seems to have an odd personality and is unable to cope with his own problems with school, social life, and his own emotions. He displays his inability to cope with school when he mentions that he is failing 4 out of 5 classes. In the article, the author states that a teen who is irritated or depressed is more likely to have a decline in grades than others. The author also says that its best the teen who suffers from depression enroll in some form of therapy to cope with their…
As Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman philosopher, once said, "A room without books is like a body without a soul.” Books have the capability to be any person's escape from reality and no book should ever be subjected to the term "banned". Every book has at least one good thing to offer, no matter how great or small. All the reader has to do is give the book a chance and find that one thing. The novel The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, is one such book that should be taught in high school.…
J. D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, is a coming of age novel, narrated by Holden Caulfield a 17 year old teenager grappling with his transition into adulthood. Throughout the novel Holden tells us of his triumphs but mostly of his tribulations. Holden’s critical tone sets the mood for the novel in which he is constantly snarky and spiteful. Holden’s repetitive speech patterns demonstrate that his inability to change his ways of constantly criticizing everyone ultimately reflects his depression and insecurity, which is rooted in his troubled experiences. Salinger does this to convey that someone’s painful experiences can be projected onto others and used as a mechanism of self defense and as a reflection of their own troubles.…
Holden Caulfield has not had a great past and is not a simple person. He is up and then down. When Holden was young, his younger brother Allie died. His brother died from leukemia on July 18, 1946, when he was thirteen years old. That night Allie died, Holden had a mental break down, and broke all the windows in his garage with his bare hands.…
J.D. Salinger wrote and released “The Catcher In The Rye” in July 16, 1951. The story is about a young boy who had many problems, especially the fear of change and growing up. Holden Caulfield is a 16 year old boy who has been expelled from school four times. Salinger uses symbolism to show Holden’s thoughts and feelings and to describe his personality too. Salinger does this because Holden is not mature enough to see these things for himself.…
Number One The main idea of the story is basically Holden Caulfield's motivation throughout the story. Holden goes to New York City and spends most of his time looking for something, but he never tells the reader exactly what he is looking for, I don’t even think he knows exactly what it is he is looking for. He seems to be looking for friendship or just genuine communication, but he is looking for it in the wrong place. Nobody else is concerned with friendship or honesty, besides his little sister Phoebe.…
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger has been assigned in schools across the world for years. It is a novel loved by many, but also banned by many. Ever since its release the book has caused controversy. If read at face value the novel may give schools and other administrations plausible reason to censor it. Sexual references, underage alcohol abuse, cigarette smoking, violence, and vulgar language, are repeated themes in the life of the main character, Holden Caulfield.…
As humans we constantly find ourselves facing the fact that we are growing older and accepting the responsibilities that come with age. Sometimes we see teenagers, young kids and even some adults fall into a place where they are emotionally stuck in the past. In the catcher in the rye, Holden Caulfield is a character that portrays an irrational fear of growing up through displays of angst such as; Childlike behaviour, rebellion and sheltering/protecting others (young children). His fear and dread are normal reactions to adulthood and the phoniness he has come to understand it entails. In the novel the Holden tries to act mature but in his attempts he reveals the dept of his immaturity.…
3R Journal - Catcher in the Rye In Chapter 22 of “The Catcher in the Rye”, Holden Caulfield and her younger sister Phoebe’s conversation continues. Phoebe shows her concern over Holden’s future. She asks him what he would like to be, suggesting traditional careers like lawyers and scientists. Holden rejects without second thought, and reveals what he truly wants to be.…
Responsible parents do their best to make sure their children avoid harmful influences to their young, moldable minds. When some parents at Boron High School in California began complaining about their children reading The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, other people began to question whether it was appropriate for school. Parents argued that the main character, Holden Caulfield, who struggles with depression and other psychological disorders, is too rebellious and promotes immoral behavior. Like Boron High School, many schools across the country have banned the infamous novel. Though the novel does provide an insight into teen depression, these schools were correct in banning the book due to its glorification of premarital sex, vulgar…
The year was 2014 and, as usual, I was procrastinating. At this particular time I was hit with senior itis a full semester early. I had been previously assigned to create vocabulary flashcards for my chemistry class. Facebook was no longer interesting and there was nothing worth watching on television. Therefore, I needed a new form of distraction.…
Rebellion against the cultural norms determined by society can lead an individual into some of the most defining moments in their life. Most of the time, I am judged because I go against the crowd. However, going against the crowd is what has defined and shaped who I am. I am not afraid to go against the expectations when my convictions drive my decisions. I see value in being an individual, and I have never felt the need to apologize for the qualities that make me different.…
(Banned books Awareness)The themes of the novel are another reason on why it was banned. There are eightthemes, which are, mortality, family, suffering, women and femenity, religion, and duty. Mortality, suffering, religion, women and femenity were the reasons why highschool boards andother grownups thought the novel was “too much” for the students. The theme mortality, is alarge part of the novel. “ As I Lay Dying , suggests that dying is a relief from the suffering oflife.”…
Salinger used in this book has been both criticized and praised by many experts. Seeing as the writing style and plot are very unorthodox, I believe that most writers that stick to the rules of writing and have a less open mind would not like the style of this writing, but people looking for a unique story will. Many critics love this book purely because of its ingenuity as it is different from most other books in style of writing, and overall content. The Catcher in the Rye captures a turning point in history in an entertaining way and uses a different writing style from most authors. For these reasons, this book has stuck out as one of the most influential books of all…
