(Banned books Awareness)The themes of the novel are another reason on why it was banned. There are eightthemes, which are, mortality, family, suffering, women and femenity, religion, and duty.Mortality, suffering, religion, women and femenity were the reasons why highschool boards andother grownups thought the novel was “too much” for the students. The theme mortality, is alarge part of the novel. “ As I Lay Dying , suggests that dying is a relief from the suffering oflife.” In the theme suffering, the characters suffer every day. The characters are apovertystricken family that are trying to bury their dead mother. In religion, the characters aremock God and question if there even is one. In the last theme, women and femenity, the womenhave it hard. The novel concludes single pregnant teenage girls with unwanted babies, who arelegally trying to have a secret abortion. (Shmoop Editorial Team) These themes are considered“inappropriate” for students due to parents and school boards complaining that they are tooyoung to be reading this novel. Many novels include God’s name in vain, the mentioning of reincarnation, abortion, profanity, and masturbation, but, the novel should be unbanned. Although, it does containinappropriate topics, I do not think that the novel is too suggestive for high school students. Thenovel helps
