The appropriate progression for Mr. McKinley’s post-bariatric surgery diet usually involves a clear liquid diet for days 1-2 post-surgery, a full liquid diet for days 3-17, a pureed diet for days 14-24, a soft diet for days 21-42, and finally, a regular diet after 42 days (or 6 weeks).1,3,7 Each phase (excluding the clear liquid diet) can include food items from previous phases. Items that are avoided throughout every phase include simple carbohydrate foods (to prevent dumping syndrome) and the use of a straw (to reduce air intake which can fill the gastric pouch).7 The clear liquid diet will provide Mr. McKinley with fluid, electrolytes and energy of about 48 fl. oz./day total to encourage restoration of gut activity.7 It includes items such as broth, diet gelatin, sugar-free popsicles, clear protein supplements, and/or unsweetened, decaffeinated, noncarbonated beverages such as juices and herbal tea.1,3 The full-liquid diet allows for further healing of the gastrointestinal tract and allows 48-64 fl. oz./day.
