At the same time, thousands of Hutu were murdered because they opposed the killing campaign and the forces directing it”(“United Human Rights Council”). This is a hard number to take in when you consider these are real people. These are lives being stripped away too soon. This genocide was caused my corruption in the government. The Hutu were killing anyone who looked like they were apart of the Tutsi population. The people were unable to fight back due to the poor economic, environmental, and poverty status of the country. A fellow classmate, Emily Ford, stated that the issues that Rwanda faced were stemmed off of the high population and poverty rate. I agree with this statement completely. Any country that has high population will eventually run dry of their natural resources. This will not only affect the well-being of the people, by the environment as well. "Rwanda 's economic improvement became halted by drought and accumulating environmental problems (especially deforestation, soil erosion, and soil fertility losses)"(Diamond, 315). This does not make it easy to live off of the land. In this unit I have learned the significance of the state of the environment and the people have a large affect on their history. Even though they were in such a low state of living, the are people as well. They did not deserve to die just because they were different.
