The American Grading System: The Effects of Grading
Collecting information does not require testing, and sharing that information does not require grades. It 's becoming increasingly clear that the rigid and judgmental foundation of modern education is the main point for many students ' worst qualities, making it harder for many to learn because of its negative reinforcement, encouraging those who do well to gradually favor the reward of a passing grade. The insane demand of the students ends up wrecking their education. This causes low self-esteem and students end up hating learning. The American grading system needs to change because it tends to diminish students’ interest in learning, create a preference for the easiest possible tasks, and reduces the quality of students’ thinking.
Grades tend to diminish students’ interest in whatever they’re learning. A 2002 study at the University of Michigan found that “When students were asked about what they base their self-worth on, more than 80 percent said academic competence...” (Dittmann 1). Since it’s overwhelmingly poor students who are prone to bad grades, a self-reinforcing loop is created. Hardship leads to bad grades and low self-esteem, which leads to more hardship and social dysfunction. A 2006 study at King’s College showed “...adolescents with low self-esteem had poorer mental and physical health, worse economic prospects…” (Institute of Psychiatry 1).
