Jay Gatsby wears a mask the entire time up until death. It turns out this man who hosts extravagant parties for the rich in his big Mansion went to Oxford and now lives in the West egg meaning he is rich and made himself to be that way. Lunch one day Gatsby introduces Nick to Meyer Wolfshiem and it seems that Gatsby, with Wolfshiem’s help, became rich through bootlegging (Fitzgerald 73). Tom and Daisy lived across the bay from Gatsby on the East Egg side (Fitzgerald 10). Daisy in the beginning of the book is a mother and a wife living a wealthy lifestyle because Tom’s money. I think Daisy wears a mask towards Gatsby because she has an affair with him and she tells him that she is in love with him and never stopped loving him when he left. She wears a mask because when Gatsby confronts her to tell Tom that she doesn’t love him she gets all emotional, dramatic, and confused. She tells Tom she doesn’t love him and later on she said she would be lying if she said she didn’t love Tom (Fitzgerald 139-149). Daisy is just with Gatsby because of all the fun she has with him and how he treats her.
