The purpose of this essay is to explain the effects of Tetrodotoxin (TTX) to a neuron. The role of a neuron is to communicate electrochemical messages with other neurons to carry out a response (Marieb & Hoehn, 2013, p. 387). Therefore, action potential and neurotransmitters are electrochemical messages that allow neurons to communicate with each other. However, when a neurotoxin is present the communication between neurons becomes disrupted (Ruben & Lee, 2008, p. 407). Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a neurotoxin found in the gonads and liver of a puffer fish. It binds to sodium voltage gated channels, so electrical signals cannot propagate (Ruben & Lee, 2008, p. 407).
