Technology has reshaped education. The generation known as the ‘digital natives’ has be apart of the change in our system of education. The ‘digital natives’ are the generation that has grown up with and interacted with sophisticated technology. The role that teachers has in the learning process, how students are evaluated and how the students are taught has been modified to suit future generations growing up in a digital age. With information technology becoming the most highly paid and with the highest employment rate it is now necessity to be computer literate in this age. Growing up with a medium that allows instant access to knowledge, communication and entertainment has changed the purpose of education for this generation as school is no longer the source of information. Educational institutes are now used to guide rather than to inform.

The ‘digital natives’ debate: a critical review of the evidence describes a digital native as an individual born between 1980 and 1994 (Bennett et al.). It goes on to describe this generation to have “sophisticated knowledge of information technology” and draws the link that because of this knowledge the individuals have prefered learning styles. This means that a singular style of teaching can no longer be applied towards a group of students as learning is no longer dependent on an educational institute.
