The power of fear and unknown is what stunts the growth of negative opinions and is the underlying cause of hateful actions. Fox News reports in the article “Obama Policy to Bring Syrian Refugees Into US Raises Concern Among Republicans, Intelligence Community” about McCaul rejecting immigrants “,McCaul suggested at the hearing that allowing Syrian refugees into the U.S. would be a ‘huge mistake.’ ‘Most of (the refugees) are women and children, but there are male actors that concern me,’ he said. ‘This would be a federally sanctioned welcome party, if you will, to potential terrorists in the United States.’” (2015). It could be argued that the FBI and Homeland Security do not have information on every refugee, therefore it is risky to let refugees in without extensive background checks. However, we should not have these checks take long, more than a few months, because what many do not realize is that these people are stuck in a warzone. Therefore, taking up to two years for backgrounds checks means they have to struggle to live in countries, such as Syria, for a long time and could potentially not make it to America due to poor living conditions and lack of resources. Additionally, contrary to beliefs about many refugees being terrorists, it has been recorded by AJ Willingham, Paul Martucci and Natalie Leung in the article “The chances of a refugee killing you - and other surprising immigration stats,” “According to the CATO Institute, not one person from the seven countries included in the ban has killed anyone in a terror attack on US soil in the last 40 years. This includes refugees, as well.” (2017). This reassures that not all refugees are harmful and likewise not all harmful people are refugees, hence we should not take much longer than a few months to get a refugee entrance into America. Politicians who are in charge of these decisions, should look at the statistics before making inaccurate
