Depression is one of the most commonly known mental disorders, and yet the most misunderstood. This paper will shed light on four sources and how they explain depression, the symptoms, treatments, and ultimately who it affects. This paper will also give information on the layout of the resources; developer, graphics, target audience, etc. Given that I have depression, this assignment has given me the perfect opportunity to learn more about it myself, as well as using it to inform others. The National Institute of Mental Health or NIMH is primarily the most reliable source to use when understanding any mental illness or disorder. The premise of the website is to inform anyone who is interested in learning more about a specific illness or disorder, which in this case is depression. The government owned site doesn’t use exceptionally large words that would only really be understood by doctors or scientists. NIMH’s definition of depression is “a common but serious mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working” - inevitably true. With depression, many outsiders (those of whom don’t have the disorder) think that depression is a feeling of deep sadness for only a few hours. In reality, the diagnosis is based on a two-week incubation period of symptoms of the disorder.
