With the use of symbolism the director is able to challenge the thinking of the viewers by sequencing and creatively symbolising objects within the film. In the “You have to let me go scene” while ashes fall from the apartment, where Teddy Daniels tells us previously that Dolores died in their apartment together “she died.” He said. Dolores is in full view as she burns from the back, but when Teddy approaches her, blood seeps from her stomach and she appears to be drenched in water. The audience is able to question why Dolores is soaked. Teddy Daniels even says so himself “Why are you all wet, baby?” Therefore, we as an audience begin to be challenged by the meaning of water. At the start of the film where Teddy Daniels is surrounded by water and says “I just can't, can't stomach the water.” To then realise that water is literally what surrounds him on the Island, stopping him from leaving Shutter Island and to then be revealed, is consequently why his kids were killed. The responsibility of water consumes and surrounds him, with this being the core reason his kids died, we are revealed from the extensive amounts water is mentioned and seen throughout the film. The main focus in Shutter Island is to challenge our thinking with the use of Teddy Daniels mental health. Mental health is a huge aspect within Shutter Island, which identifies the genre of psychological thriller to be escalated. Shutter Island is a psychological thriller, psychological meaning, stated by the Oxford University press “Of, affecting, or arising in the mind; related to the mental and emotional state of a person.” In the first scene on the boat, Teddy Daniel’s is in front of a mirror, we as an audience are set in the mirror and we are positioned very close to Teddy Daniel’s face. Additionally, allowing the audience to be a reflection of Teddy Daniel’s. We as an audience are able to be placed inside Teddy Daniel’s mind. Subsequently, we are able to reveal the true purpose of Shutter Island and why Teddy Daniels is on it. Throughout the film, we are confronted by flashbacks, hallucinations and delusions of Teddy Daniels mind. Teddy Daniels has various flashbacks due to his trauma he had been through with his wife’s death and him serving overseas in the U.S military. This allows the audience to question his mental health state. Complementary to this, his hallucinations and delusions, missing "patient 67", the “four people died” in their apartment, Rachel Solando’s disappearance and all the guards “searching” for her and most importantly the young girl Teddy Daniels
