He represents this because of the way he acts, as shown on page (8), “Lennie lumbered to his feet and disappeared in the brush… There were sounds of splashing’s down the river in the direction Lennie had taken.” Also he represents this because of the way he likes to grab things like mice and puppies just like a child would. He represents a sign of innocence because of the way he acts. He doesn’t mean anything that he does. As shown on page (5) of the book, “Uh-uh. Jus’ a dead mouse, George. I didn’ kill it. Honest! I found it. I found it dead.” Lennie does not know his own strengths, as in how strong he is. You can see this when he accidentally crushes the mouse in his hand by accident and does not know he actually killed the mouse. Signs of anger can be shown in the book by just another character named swamper who explains that curly is always getting into scraps with big guys and that he hates tall guys (page 29). Curly has also a masculine approach, because of this you can tell that he is not scared to pick fights with people that are bigger than him, and probably won’t back down from a fight with a tall person because of him not liking them. That’s how curly represents masculinity and how men are portrayed to be tough as rocks. The author makes curly be symbolized like this because he wants to show the connection that all men should be tough and not scared to back down from any challenge. The author could be tying this to the depression of the 1930’s and how men had to fight to survive even though they didn’t like the situation that they were in.
