Symbolism In Film

The directors use symbolism as way for us to truly understand the feelings of the characters and see what they are going through for being themselves. There are two main examples of the use of symbolism throughout this video. The first example is the use of the box and the other is the use of fire. In the very first shot of the video there is a blazing fire that is then zoomed up on later, to which we see that the box is burning inside it.
The box is first introduced in the film while it is burning in the fire and we can only assume at this point in the video’s story that there is a deeper meaning behind this. The next shot is of someone taking the box off of a shelf, at this point we know that the burning of the box will come back at the

These two symbols are used together to show how the Catholic Church’s teachings are affecting the lives of homoesexual people.The fire was shown throughout the video. It is the first shot that we see in the video, so instantly it makes an appearance and gives the impression that there is some sort of destruction throughout the video The fire is a recurring symbol in the video, which is shown to act as a threat to their love.
Above are examples of when fire was used throughout the video. The fire is constantly shown throughout the video initially as a threat but then that lead to destruction. The box and the fire together signify the issues that are faced in the society they are living in. It is understood that the fire represents the society/mob/institutes against homosexuals and the box is representative of their love. The constant fire shows that these groups are following them and are threatening to expose and ‘burn’ them. The eventual box inside the fire shows that the couple eventually lost their battle with the ‘fire’ because they were defenseless and outnumbered. The amount of fire mounted to be more powerful and was able to destroy the box even with the metal steel around it and the power of love that was
