Lord of the Flies and The Hunger Games Comparison Essay
Have you ever felt like it was all up to you to make a difference in your social situation? That is exactly how Katniss Everdeen and Ralph felt in The Hunger Games and Lord of the Flies. These novels both have an over controlling power, one main hero or heroine, and a very important meaning for fire. A common theme in both of these books is that the struggle to survive will overcome the ability to maintain any humanity.
In the Hunger Games, the fire represented rebellion and rebelling against the Capitol. Katniss used the fire symbol in most of her outfits for interviews or ceremonies, and so did Peeta. How they ended the seventy-fourth annual Hunger Games led to the start of multiple …show more content…
Since they always incorporated fire into their attires, it was turned into a symbol of rebellion. Katniss was also called the “Girl on Fire” throughout the series, she was always the center of attention, along with Peeta. So everyone always paid attention to her and watched everything that she did. When Katniss and Peeta won the games, there were outbursts of rebellions against the Capitol. These outbursts were like a raging fire that the Capitol would never be able put out. The fire in the Lord in the Flies had a very different but still very important meaning. It symbolized the slow shift from a human society into total madness and savagery. Though the fire was originally meant to stand for their only hope for survival and rescue, it backfired into a destructive, crazy incident that the boys regretted. The fire took over and the boys forgot everything they knew about etiquette and composure, and turned into animals. Even after the rule changes during the games, she found a way to look passed them and not at them. By doing this, she started a silent rebellion throughout the districts. She showed the districts that they all have the power to make a difference and change their world for the better. Katniss also saved Peeta and herself by suggesting the double-suicide, if she had not done this, one of them would have had to die. But since the Capitol needs a winner, they let both of them win. The Lord of the Flies is all about savagery and craziness. There are only a few of the boys in the novel that managed to keep their humanity intact and stay sane. Ralph was one of these boys. He did all that he could, while on the island, to keep the boys alive and tried to find a way to get help. Ever since the beginning, he was trying to keep the boys in a steady civilization and keep a fire going on the island to flag down any ships passing by. Even though by the end Ralph had lost almost all of his power over the boys on the island, Ralph’s initial ideas of keeping the fire going to get rescued did work out.
