The symbol that stands out the most in the book is fire. The fire gives power to conformity and censorship. The people feel powerful destroying their problems with fire. The society that this book takes place in is very lazy and useless, by using fire they feel like they are doing something and have a purpose. They have the power to control the society. The parlor was able to get thousands of people to walk outside and look for Montag. They hypnotize the society and the people can’t get out. The parlor has the power of conformity. The parlor does have a lot of power and it is apparent in our world right now. “I think of her hands but I don’t see them doing anything at all. They just hang there at her sides or they lie there…” (149) They parlor walls are a symbol of limitation because they take away individuality. Everyone just watches TV and does nothing. It really gives no one’s life purpose. Nobody cares when you die because the parlor walls limited them from doing anything. The parlor walls are more important than actual people and that is power and limitation at the same time.
