“Trifles”
Questions for Discussion
1. We can learn that it was Mrs. Wright who killed Mr. Wright. This isn’t evident with the Sheriff and Attorney’s investigation, but Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale’s findings clearly point to Mrs. Wright being the murderer.

2. The meaning of trifles is “a thing of little value or importance” it could also be the dessert. The sheriff saying, “Nothing here but kitchen things” is ironic because he disregards everything that’s in the kitchen thinking its useless. In reality all the clues to the murder were in the Kitchen.

3. They’re criticizing Mrs. Wright’s ways of housekeeping, probably thinking that she cant do a good job at being a housewife. Throughout the play the men are always laughing at everything the

It is a known fact that both men and women had different tasks in society. In both plays “A Doll’s House” and “Trifles”, it is obvious how women are not treated as equals by the men. The play “A Doll’s House”, which takes place in a small town in Norway, tells the “happy” life of Nora and her husband, Trovald. Then the other play “Trifles”, which takes place in Nebraska, USA, tells how the men, and the women accompanying them react differently to the life the murder suspect lived. Even though these two plays are in different continents, it is easily noticeable how men look down on women.…

The story could be considered as having began the day prior when Mr. Wright was killed or many years before that when Mrs. Wright married him and changed so much. “Trifles” has a climactic structure as is evidenced by restricted characters, locale, and scenes as well as a plot that starts very late in the story. Protagonist “Trifles” is different from many other plays in the fact that the main character of the play, is never actually seen. Mrs. Minnie Wright is the main character.…

In “Trifles” there are a great amount of similarities as in the case of John Hossack; however the most major comparisons are; the place and time that John Hossack or in “Trifles,” John Wright, was murdered. In both the case and in “Trifles” the wife of the murdered man was the one that was convicted of the murder. Within “Trifles” John Wright, the man who was portrayed as John Hossack was murdered by a hanging in the middle of the night while he was asleep (Glaspell 254). This is also stated within the writing about the case of John Hossack in “John Hossack | Iowa Cold Cases.”…

After all Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters could have discovered it themselves. As the scene of the kitchen is introduced, it is soon disregarded by the men as amounting to nothing in regards to the murder of Mr.Wright. A kitchen during the nineteenth century was thought to be nothing more than a woman’s place and a segment of a nineteenth century women's’ role. As Suzy Holstein points out, “ An exploration of the play reveals a fundamental difference between the women's actions and the men's, a difference grounded in varying understandings of the home space.” (The Midwest Quarterly)…

The setting of the kitchen within “Trifles” serves as a representation of the important feminist subject that women are oppressed by men; they are looked down upon when they have an opinion and are especially looked down upon for their female abilities that are made to be inferior compared to the opposite sex. Mr. Hale, a neighboring farmer, and his wife Mrs. Hale; the town sheriff, Henry Peters and his wife Mrs. Peters accompanied by the county attorney George Henderson had all made their way into the Wright’s home to look for evidence that could lead them to John Wright’s murder being solved. Throughout the play Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale had taken the time to psychologically analyze Mrs. Wright’s home and her actions she undertook before she was detained by police all while in the midst of trying to figure out what exactly had happened to her husband. However, the men: Mr. Henderson, Mr. Peters, and Mr. Hale were in search of evidence that was tangible rather than psychological. All three men insisted on criticizing the women for worrying about unimportant things when in fact these “unimportant things” led to both women solving the case.…

In conclusion, the play “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell has a lot of symbols throughout that helps the reader figure out what Mrs. Wright could really be feeling. Since we never get to hear directly from her, we can only analyze and figure out for ourselves through important symbols presented in the play. Each symbol has an equally important part in the evaluation of the life of Mrs. Wright and the relationship she had with her husband so we can figure out why Mrs. Wright may have been motivated to strangle…

Trifles gives a perfect example of a classical linear plot with exposition, an inciting incident, rising action, climax, and finally falling action. Although, most of the play takes place in the rising action the inciting incident and climax and climax are arguable the most important aspects of a play. In Trifles specifically where the inciting incident that spurs the action throughout the rest of the play has been up for interpretation since the play was written. I personally think that the inciting incident is when we realize that Mr. Wright is dead. This occurs on the top of the second page of the play when Mr. Hale is describing the events the prior morning.…

The play is about a murder which is most certainly not a trifle but throughout the play the men refer to the women as having trifles “Well, women are used to worrying over trifles” (Hale 1262). The entire time the men are looking for some type of evidence to support their theory that Mrs. Wright had murdered her husband while the women and their “trifles” essentially lead them to the evidence that could convict Mrs. Wright. The women discover a quilt, an empty birdcage and eventually find the dead bird in a box in Mrs. Wright's sewing basket. The bird has been strangled in the same manner as John…

When he asks, if the bird has flown, Mrs. Hale lies “we think the cat got it.” The women empathize with Minnie and their perspective impels them to in a sense relive her entire married life rather than simply to research one violent moment. The point of view of Trifles is very critical to this story. The third person point of view used in Trifles does not let us know what really happened but lets the audience figure it out with the characters.…

Hale and Mrs. Peters also have a kinship to Minnie, just as to each other. They respect her work as a homemaker. Mrs. Hale quickly comes to Minnie's defense when her housekeeping skills are questioned, saying, "'There's a great deal of work to be done on a farm'" (1326). The women display their loyalty to each other and their sympathy for one another, too. Mrs. Peters can identify with the loneliness and sadness of losing something you love.…
