The only way to solve this problem is with a Green Revolution, which will create a sustainable world. The revolution, Friedman thinks, needs to be led by the U.S., because our capitalist economy can drive technological innovations. Since America is no longer in the lead in terms of power, we need to become the lead innovators to fix our own economy and the world’s. Hot, Flat, and Crowded was written to communicate these issues and find solutions. Friedman argues that this problem can’t be simply be solved by using energy efficient light bulbs, change can’t be made with a few people doing small things, but with innovation, progress, and economy, which he thinks are the most important aspects in changing the future. I chose this quote to describe the political situation America is facing, “In a flat world, no one can turn off the growth machine . . . It would be political suicide . . . So because no one wants to commit individual suicide, we are committing collective suicide'"(97) Politics have changed the phrase global warming into something far less serious than it is. When a politician preaches about climate change they’re ridiculed, even being neutral on the topic is something to be ashamed of. Admitting that global warming is a serious issue is political suicide, which isn’t limited to America, but has become a laughable issue across the globe. Although any serious scientist says that climate change is real, politicians refuse to care, they spend their time on issues relevant to their reelection, disregarding facts in order to gain power rather than helping their country and the planet. This fear of speaking the truth is causing the world to suffer
