In “Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulin” directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and “Grand Hotel Budapest” directed by Wes Anderson, both directors use the formalistic element of sound to convey and explore the theme of courage. This essay will first analyze the formal elements of sound found in “Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulin” and will then analyze the sound used in “Grand Hotel Budapest.”
According to Fournier-Lanzoni, Jean-Pierre’s film which was released on April 25th 2001, is a compelling reminder of the comparative strength and vitality of contemporary French cinema” (para. 2, 372). The film is whimsical and demonstrates a unique character which some could relate to. In the film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, through oversaturated colors and sound effects, Amélie represents a person who sees the world in a different way. Sound includes dialogue, ambience, effects, and music (Barsam, 36). The film presents dark humor yet sound makes the film more harmonious and jovial. “Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulin” uses sound in a manner that makes the public become more engaged and attentive to the film. Furthermore, its music is able to captivate the feel of the scene.
