Harry Chapin is musician, and songwriter, he wrote a heart breaking song called “Cat’s in the Cradle” in 1947. This sad/soft rock song, tells a story about a father who did not scheduled enough time to spend with his son. Furthermore this song tells a strong meaningful message about managing your time spend with your family, over one's career. The main theme of this song is a father’s regret of not spending time with his son.
In the first verse of the song starts off with a soft melody, explaining how the father could not spend time with his newborn son. The father had to work and travel around the world in order to make money for his family, so he was not there for his son even when he was learning to walk and speak. In the last sentence the son says “I’m gonna be like you Dad” foreshadows the ending of the song where the son almost turns out like his father. The silver spoon represents the father making money for his family and providing food for them, which is why it is a spoon. The second metaphor is “Little boy blue and the man on the moon”. This metaphor shows the distance between the father and the son. Little boy blue is a metaphor for the son and man on the moon is the father, showing how far apart they are from each other.
