I was handing out food with Herb at the closed down grocery store. The power outage was really taking its toll. Then in somewhat of a flash we both found ourselves on the first episode of season 19, on my favorite show Survivor! “Umm… is it just me or did we not sign up for this?” exclaimed Herb in a shocked voice. I wasn’t really sure either.…

A Response to Question 1, Section 1: The Meaning of Life: Wolf vs. Taylor Both Richard Taylor and Susan Wolf understand the difficulty of answering the question, “What is the meaning of life?” Taylor begins his “The Meaning of Life” by saying that we do not even understand what the question means to then answer it, and Wolf claims in her own “The Meanings of Lives” that the question is embarrassing to ask because, as Taylor asserts, we really do not understand what is being asked here. Taylor proposes, then, the best way to answer this is to ask what makes for a meaningless life, and perhaps from this comparison, we can find some answers to the original question. Wolf appreciates Taylor’s approach as she also adopts his method, and even though…
In the middle of the 17th century, thinkers in the enlightenment began to question how belief in the existence of a monotheistic God could be rationally supported. A number of arguments for and against the existence of God emerged at this time, and while the philosophical debate on the existence of God is still in session, the initial dust has settled. At this point in time, it is abundantly clear that a the cosmological argument is untenable at both a metaphysical and empirical level, and that the various versions of the cosmological argument fail to support the existence of God. There is good reason for critically examining the cosmological argument. Theists have made a claim that God exists.…
“An Unintended Life” “When something is meaningful, it has significance and worth not just to ourselves or even our closest friends and family, but to a much larger group” (McGonigal 446). In Jane McGonigal’s essay “Becoming Apart of Something Bigger Than Ourselves”, this is a part of her definition of meaning. When reading and thinking about this quote, it evidently relates to Elizabeth Eckford and Hazel Bryant’s lives during their child and adult years described in the novel written by David Margolick, “Elizabeth and Hazel, Two Women of Little Rock”. Both ladies, though in different ways, brought meaning into their lives starting with a famous photo taken portraying racism during the civil rights era. The definition of meaning McGonigal…
Thomas Jefferson believed in the equality of all people, and that “they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, among these is the pursuit of Happiness.” (DI) Jefferson used “Happiness” because America is supposed to be a place where individuals come and live the life they want to abundantly. Happiness can be perceived differently; such as, some individuals just want to love one another in peace, others want to raise their children in a Democracy, and a few people move for the ability to get an education. The vague word of happiness gives the opportunity for the people to decide for themselves whatever value to fill that void. Jefferson also valued the people should have power to govern themselves and replace anything…

When someone undertakes a mission they have a long term goal in mind that they want to accomplish. These long term goals that they have set for themselves are used to get motivated and instead of doing something without knowing what the purpose is they have a guide to lead them to their goal. The three characters I have chosen stay motivated because they have people in their lives that have helped them and that they wanted to make proud. People are driven to undertake missions because many feel that they want to repay the people that supported them by making them proud.…
The definition of pioneer is the following: one who is first or among the earliest in any field of inquiry, enterprise,or progress. Being the oldest, he naturally took on the leadership role when it came to him taking care of his sisters. One day when he was fourteen, James went to see the movie 2001:…
In Susan Wolf’s paper “The Meanings of Lives,” she discusses the qualifications of and the innate human yearning for a meaningful and fulfilling life. The foundation for her argument lies in her three criterion for meaning which include involvement, purpose, and success. She then continues her argument by explaining the opposite of each of these criterion as a stereotypical person. However, Wolf’s assertion suffers from being overly general in that it makes the assumption that all humans have access to the same resources and opportunities to perform the tasks required to be considered meaningful by her standards.…
