I was handing out food with Herb at the closed down grocery store. The power outage was really taking its toll. Then in somewhat of a flash we both found ourselves on the first episode of season 19, on my favorite show Survivor! “Umm… is it just me or did we not sign up for this?” exclaimed Herb in a shocked voice. I wasn’t really sure either. “Just play along” I said.
“Welcome all to the first episode of Survivor!” said the enthusiastic host, Jeff Probst. Herb and I appeared to be on the same team, team orange. “The rest of the teams look so strong, I don’t think we can do this.” Herb said nervously. “Don’t worry Herb!” I said trying to calm him down.
After the host finished presenting the introduction, he presented us our first challenge. The challenge was to make our way through an obstacle course starting at point A ending at point B. Simple Right? There was a catch. We couldn’t use

We approached our first obstacle, a group of men were trying to steal a few of our crucial items. The obstacle was easier than we had expected. It had seemed like we had encountered something like it before. As we passed the obstacles, each one seemed easier than the last. Herb and I had a recollection of each obstacle, but neither of us could put our finger on it. “Okay, this can’t be real.” declared Herb “You and I are a team on Survivor, and we remember each obstacle as if in another world!” “I know this must be a dream, I mean one second ago we were handing out food and the next, we are team orange on Survivor!” Herb and I completed the challenge in first place! A split second before the host gave us our prize for winning the first challenge, simultaneously Herb and I remembered why all the obstacles were from. They were occurrences that had happened to us during the power outage. In another quick flash Herb and i both ended up exactly where we were before, handing out food. As if it all were a

I finally catch my breath from my panic attack as I wait for my team to be called to the starting line. I stand shaking, nervous and afraid of what is to come. I try to search for some type of assurance from my teammates, but they are just as nervous as I am. We are about to run a total of 5 kilometers, up a large hill, snaking through trees and shrubs. The mud was squelching under our tan boots, from the downpour the night prior, as we anxiously waited to begin.…

It was very fortunate that we were wearing foot covering devices otherwise we would have pin-like things sticking out of our feet. We then reached the last hill, which was more like a mountain, we knew over and we had reached our final destination. Looking upon our destination from the top of the mountain, it looked just like a castle that was constructed from the forest. Wooden and damp, from the skies crying the previous night. Smiles that reached our faces upon looking out at the castle, were the same shape as a crescent moon.…

My “personal odyssey” occurred relatively recently, this past summer while I was at a sleepaway camp in New Hampshire. The last year you are eligible to come, the summer before your sophomore year, you stay in a cabin off the main camp called Cabin 12, which holds great significance due to the fact that you’re the oldest on campus, and closer to a counselor then a camper. Being engaged, on time to activities, and having extreme enthusiasm to an almost unbearable point. I was exposed to a concept, one in which you see more clearly when you grow up. This idea is embodied in the quote, “fake it ‘till you make it.”…

More out of optimism than courage, I tried to lead the kids back to the site. I spent almost a good hour looking for clues as to which direction we came from, searching for tracks like I’d seen on survival shows, yet it proved meaningless. Suddenly, I realized two things. One was that I had been in a similar situation before. The other was that I had forgotten about the most obvious clues, footprints.…
