In Ernesto Galarza’s memoir, Barrio Boy, Ernesto is arriving at a new school and has to face many challenges in order to accomplish his goal. The main reason for Galarza being motivated to reach his goal is Galarza’s teacher, Miss Ryan, who helped him through the many challenges he was facing and I feel as though he wanted to make Miss Ryan proud. Farah’s motivation was mainly her mother, throughout the story Farah stays strong through the worst times by thinking of her mother and knowing how much her mother is struggling. When Ahmedi says “Her asthma was pretty bad at this point, poor thing. No doubt, her anxiety made it worse, but in such circumstances how could she rid herself of anxiety?”, this shows how Ahmedi had sympathy for her mother and this is an example of one of Ahmedi’s mother’s struggles that kept Ahmedi going.
