Several studies reflect that families with low incomes are more likely to consume sugary drinks, salty snacks and foods with high trans-fat. For instance, a Hispanic patient who speaks very little English, will feel more comfortable speaking with a nurse or physician who shares the same language or cultural heritage, than someone who does not. It allows the individual to express themselves freely and not feel worried about the person understanding them or not. Although sharing the same language or culture does not guarantee a better health care delivery, but it’s a start. It’s a matter of understanding that our society is becoming widely diverse and in dire need of individuals who go the extra mile to study and understand the various cultures that exist within our society, to reduce the health disparities that exist.
