Society places a negative connotation on plastic surgery. People who view cosmetic surgery as narcissistic think individuals get “unnecessary” procedures to change their physical appearance in order to assimilate to beauty standards that society has put in place. However, many people don’t know plastic surgery isn’t the typical boob job or a face lift. Plastic surgery is the reconstruction of body/facial defects due to birth disorders, trauma, burns and diseases. Some examples of plastic surgery are burn repair surgery, scar revision surgery and defect repair(cleft palate). Being able to fix scars and change dysfunctional areas of the body can boost the confidence of people who have been damaged and hurt.
Boob jobs and face lifts are considered cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is done to improve aesthetic appeal. Some procedures include breast augmentations and liposuction. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeon’s 2015 Plastic Surgery Report, 15.9 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2015, a 2% increase since 2014. Of those cosmetic procedures, 1.7 million were surgical processes and 14.2 million were minimally invasive procedures. The report also states “Breast augmentation continues to be the top cosmetic surgical procedure and has been since 2006”(2015 Plastic Surgery Statistics 5) and “Facial rejuvenation procedures experienced the most growth, as 2015 marked the highest number of botulinum toxin type A injections to date, with over 6.7 million…
