Since its inception in the early 2000’s, social media sites Facebook and Pinterest have had a profound and often negative affect on our lives by converting people into addictive and obsessive users. Without realizing it, these sites are changing users into people they do not even recognize Facebook and Pinterest users are logging on to their accounts as frequent as possible in the hopes it will make them happier by seeing other users’ positive, beautiful and exciting postings, but this fixation is actually making them feel worse as they critique and compare themselves and their lives to a high standard of near perfection that does not exist for most people which ultimately leads to negative changes in how users see and feel about themselves. Users become too worried about not having or living the life the see on other postings or about the number of likes they’re getting and this all contributes to having a negative affect on ones’ self esteem. In most cases checking our Facebook account’s is becoming part of our daily routine. According to Digital Buzz’s Facebook has over 500 million active users and it is being used by approximately 1 in every 13 people. When thinking about the term Facebook you think of happiness and friendly so logging on that’s what we look for. But instead we feel the opposite we feel depressed and lonely, and doing this is only hurting our self esteem.
