Social Media and Its Effect on Society Social media is always on the rise. Jeff Bullas stated in a recent article, “72% of all internet users are now active on social media.” This goes to show that more than half of internet users are sharing their information whether it is private or not. Social media has a great effect on how people around the world share and get their information. People fail to recognize that all information in which they share is processed and saved by the individual owners of each social media site. Similar to The Circle, large social media businesses are shifting societal norms by openhandedly giving people a sense of power, corrupting people’s social lives, and eliminating people’s privacy. People use social media as a sense of power. This allows social media users in this day and age to feel as if they are moving up in the world. In The Circle, Mae’s main focus is to exist and have people recognize that she exists. At first, she does not enjoy the continuous input that is required of her through social media. But it was only an amount of time until it consumed her life. In today’s society, people use their social media accounts to gain a higher power, based on how many likes, retweets, and followers they acquire. Egger uses the quote, “You sit at a desk twelve hours a day and you have nothing to show for it except some numbers that won 't exist or be remembered in a week.
