Living in a world where there are many different people who believe different beliefs, live different lives, and learn in different ways. People become well aware of the fact that everyone is human and not everything goes the way they had planned. While watching “Two American Families” one will come to the conclusion that even though two families who live in America who are completely different, one, a white family and one, an African American family. People are going through some of the same things that you are going through, they just cope with it differently. While reading through “The Uses of Poverty: The Poor Pay All.” many people learn that poor provide jobs for others because there is a need for jobs to help keep the welfare programs running. Whether you think the welfare system is the United States is a well developed program, or not, it is an opportunity for those who are certified and need a job, to have one. The mother of one family knew that the people who she worked for could not afford to pay her that much so she decided to not have them pay her that much. The job she has was one that not many people could handle, she was a caretaker for a sixteen year old boy who was physically and mentally handicapped. In order to have that job, one needs to understanding and patient. Within the culture there are such things as subcultures, which are cultural groups within a larger culture. The mother was poor, but she was not poor enough where she needed to go on welfare, she loved that job even though it did not pay well. Nowadays, many people assume that if you are poor, that you do not have a care in the world and live off of others. In some situations, that is true, but for other situations, that statement is false. Throughout the United States today, there are many people who are poor who are trying to get a job, but there are not any jobs available that they qualify for. The poor not only helps provide jobs for the upper and middle classes. The poor also aids the upward mobility of groups just about them in the class hierarchy (Gans 1971). Meaning that the poor help keep the classes above them going and sticking to their usual status in life.
