Have you ever felt really confident about something you did in life, and then just have it crushed by somebody else’s opinion of you. Some may not realize that people do try to improve the situation that they are in, but sometimes it does not work out. Larkin Warren, the author of “I Was a Welfare Mother” wanted to inform people that it is not fair to judge people, especially if you do not know what they are going through. It can be hard in the real world as you grow up; you are not a little kid anymore that likes to play with barbie dolls or mini racecars. You become an adult with more responsibilities such as paying bills, rent, a car, a family of your own, etc. things may get tougher.
Warren had a lot of struggles in her life, but we all struggle. It is a part of life to have difficult situations thrown at us. Some people that have a mindset of “judge-and-punish-the-poor” think it is not fair to pay so much money for taxes because some of it goes to pay for assistance to people like Warren. People make opinions about other people after first impressions. No matter what type of person they are, people judge based on appearance first, because that is the first thing you can physically see or hear when you meet someone. I have had family members even tell me that somebody on the street begging for money should just get a job and they would be fine. That is understandable for some people, but sometimes it just isn’t possible. If you didn’t finish high school, can’t get a g.e.d, or are a parent that expectation could be hard to reach at that moment. Warren’s goal was to “make a better future,” a common goal of many. Despite what others would think of her, she continued to move forward and work hard for her
