American Juggalo paper by Sheida Arbabian This paper examines and analyzes deviance of a short documentary called, American Juggalo by Dir Sean Dunne, it reveals the social conditions and behaviours of a notorious marginalized group at a music festival. The focus will be to identify its causes & effects through normative violations such as folkways, taboos and laws; this gathering of Juggalos’ demonstrates the manifestation of deviance when isolated from society. Where as, at this event the partakers of this festival are considered ritualist through the absence to comply to societal pressure. They are ritualist because they do not posses institutional goals, they break the law by using illicit drugs or perform illicit acts e.g marihuana, mushrooms, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), underage drinking, and explosives. On the other hand, this event creates its own social bonds that differs from their everyday lives, their institutionalized goals and legitimate means are different, therefor one could argue that they are all conformists in this Juggalo society since they all participate in both goals and means of the Juggalo society. An example of their conformity is when an individual says that the “gathering don’t change, you do”(American Juggalo, mins). This quotation implies that the individual will adapt to the goals and means based on the environment they are in. In other words, the concepts will remain the same and the individual will choose to conform to the concept or deviate from it. For further arguments, the viewer is able to recognize nonstandard behaviours through taboos that motivates them to deviate. In like manner, the individual will have a spoiled identity because they have been stigmatized, they manage their stigmatization through humour and defiance e.g.. the man sitting on the chair with a red shirt answers the questions humorously to explain his lifestyle and the meaning of being a Juggalo. An example of deviance caused by spoiled identity is the use and abuse of drugs throughout the festival site, actions like breaking taboos such as piercings, tattoos and nudity is an act of deviance that is a portrayal of resistance against societal values. In such, the stigmatization of Juggalos’ have rendered them powerless to society and the less power an individual has the more likely they will maintain their deviant ways. These individuals have become oppressed by society and rules now work against their favour, this creates a vicious cycle, for the labelled deviant, that does not have any opportunities or possibility for reintegration into society. Lastly, in a gendered conflict point of view the women have different standards of normal behaviour in comparison to men, which makes the women perceived as most deviant. In the film, some women are partially or fully nude which is against the law i.e indecent
