Social, Cultural, Health, And Economic Issues Regarding Retirement

The purpose of this assignment is to provide the student an opportunity to explore the social, cultural, health and economic issues pertaining to the older adult, including their preparation for, subsequent adjustment to, and special needs and concerns of retirement. To get more varied responses, I chose two respondents with different socioeconomic standing. I believe this would enhance the overall learning experience from the activity by providing different views on the realities of retiring in America. My first respondent was Mr. S.L., a 94 year old Caucasian male. He was born and raised in the U.S. He was originally from Chicago, but he moved to the Hampton Roads area for business. Before retiring, S.L. owned and managed a very lucrative architecture firm in Norfolk, which his son now operates. He has been retired for 25 years and he lives in Harbor’s edge with his wife. Mr. S.L.’s interview was conducted in one of the dining facilities inside harbor’s edge. My second respondent was Mr. R.F., an 81 year old Asian American male who was originally from the Philippines. He immigrated to the U.S. in the late 80’s to provide better opportunities for his family. Like many immigrants, he faced difficult challenges that come with moving to another country, such as the language barrier and job security. He had to work two jobs to make ends meet. He worked various jobs like maintenance and custodial work before he eventually retired. He and his wife now live with his daughter in…
