Old adults enjoy good psychological health. They are adversely affected by mental health disorders and in functioning. Some late-life problems that result in depression and anxiety include coping with physical health problems, caring for a spouse with a physical disability, grieving the death of loved ones, and managing conflict with family members. Addressing these problems and treating these conditions results in decreased emotional suffering, improved physical health, lessened disability, and a better quality of life for older adults and their families.

1. Psychological: Ageism stems from our extremely internalised uncertainty of our own ageing and death. In all human societies, youth has been associated with energy, strength, rapidity, biological fertility, and so on. We therefore understand older people as a lower social status, since they have fewer life years ahead of them.
2. Cultural: From ancient times most cultures consider elderly and their status low in the society. Human race, though has developed a lot, still clings on to this basic tendency.
3. Economic: Retirement is often accompanied by a more negative view of the economic value of older people who are frequently revealed as a financial burden with regard to their pension, health and social care costs.
