The society at large view the elderly in a very negative manner and because of this the elderly have suffered great prejudice not only in their community but also; in the workplace where bias is shown against them considering them to be incapable. It also highlighted the three components of ageism and they are stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination and these three all speaks to negativism towards older people. Ageism have impacted the country in the most negative manner and because of such an effect the elderly are suffering greatly both emotionally, mentally, psychologically. It is evident based upon the increase and advancement in medicinal technology that the older adults are living longer they are known as the baby boomers. It is good that individuals are living longer but the negative side is that the society at large are not equipped to deal with this trend on the rise. According to the article it stated that “In 2012, the public cost of Medicaid and Medicare was at least S997 billion, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. By 2022, the total public cost of these programs is expected to reach $1.96 trillion.” It shows how unprepared they are for the baby boomers. However, it is important that they find means and way of implementing logical plans, that will decrease the strain the baby boomers place on the society and that way they will also try to minimize or alleviate the prejudice and discrimination the elderly face on a daily basis.
In conclusion, Cultural competence is very important for helping professionals who work with older adults as there are several barriers that these individuals have to deal with on a daily basis. The way how they relate to individuals are different and also their means of communication is also factor. Unless the professionals are equipped to deal with them.
