In “Race, Gender, and Workplace Power,” by James R. Elliot and Ryan A. Smith they both argue that even though gender differences increases inequality in the workplace, racial inequality is the result of direct discrimination especially towards African Americans. One mechanism is explained in which influences direct discrimination, which can take two distinct forms; “taste discrimination, in the form of old-fashioned racism and sexism based on out-group prejudice and antipathy; and statistical discrimination, in which employers use race and sex as proxies for assessing potential productivity in candidates when they lack other information about the candidates.” (Eliot) They explain that individuals are usually evaluated based on their racial background before they’re evaluated on their job qualifications. This demonstrates how racial background interference with job opportunities especially with minority groups. Minority groups are the ones who get affected the most which continues to put them in greater disadvantage to work their way
