The east side of the pass continued to be only a trail and forced the settlers to travel on barges and rafts to cross Lake Keechelus. The entire road crossing the pass was completed from Seattle to Ellensburg in 1865.In 1884 a toll fee was placed on the road to pay for the maintenance as flooding, avalanches and rockslides were a constant problem. “By 1905, harsh winters and flooding forced settlers to rebuild the road several times to provide a safer and passable road.”
