Persuasive Essay On Smoking In Public

Smoking in Public Smoking bans in the United States have been around since the 1970’s. Since then different states have made their own laws about where you are allowed to smoke in public areas. Other states have made minimal efforts to decrease the smoking in public. Smoke bans are not made to target those who smoke, rather protect those who do not. Smoking in public produces second hand smoke that is harmful to those around them, to help reduce exposure to second hand smoke for people, the government should ban smoking in all public places except in a designated smoking area and implement strict fee based private smoking areas for those who feel the need to smoke in public, also the government should mandate a class to those who purchase smoking products (such …show more content…
Studies have shown increasing the taxes of these products to be extremely effective. The studies have shown that “Every 10 percent increase in cigarette prices reduces youth smoking by about seven percent and total cigarette consumption by about four percent,” (Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, 2015). When the sales tax is increased people who smoke are more likely to smoke less, and those that have quit smoking are more likely to not pick the habit back up. Raising the taxes of tobacco products does more than just decrease second hand smoke exposure though. “Higher tobacco taxes also save money by reducing tobacco-related health care costs, including Medicaid expenses,” (Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, 2015). The higher taxes have also shown to earn states more revenue even though less tobacco is being purchased. When this happens there is less chance of being exposed to second hand smoke, since there would be less people purchasing tobacco. Raising taxes is not always something that everyone is in favor with, these people may argue against more than just tobacco
